Extremely unique wine bottle balancers crafted from 'sugar' maple. Each Spring, in order to collect sap for making maple sugar or syrup a hole was cut or drilled to allow the sap to flow. In the early days a hollow stick was placed in the hole. In 1859 the first patent was issued for a metal spout, or "spile" which would be tapped into the tree. I presume these holes are more modern than 1859, but still could be quite old. Each balancer has at least one hole and the tan/chocolate/black stain made by the spile. A few have spalting and or curly figure. $16.50 each, while supplies last. Shipping included. |
